Twelve fellowships have been awarded by the South Florida Cultural Consortium through its 2010 Visual and Media Artists Fellowship Program.  The Consortium, an alliance of the arts councils of Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Martin Counties, awarded the fellowships to six visual artists from Miami-Dade County, four from Broward County, one from Palm Beach County and one from Martin County.  Fellowships were awarded at $15,000 and $7,500 levels. The $15,000 fellowships are one of the largest such awards provided by local arts agencies in the United States.

From Miami-Dade County, the recipients are: Bert Rodriguez – $15,000; FriendsWithYou – $15,000; Michael Genovese – $15,000; Beatriz Monteavaro – $15,000; Glexis Novoa – $15,000; and the TM Sisters – $7,500.

The recipients were selected during a two-tier panel process which included the participation of regional and national arts experts.  Selection by the regional panel was totally anonymous, based solely on the quality of the artists’ work as evidenced by digital images, slides or video/films submitted.

The regional panel included: Cheryl Brutvan, Curator of Contemporary Art, Norton Museum, Palm Beach County; Carol Damian, Director and Chief Curator, Frost Museum of Art, Miami-Dade County; Jane Hart, Curator of Exhibitions, Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, Broward County; Ruba Katrib, Associate Curator, MOCA, Miami-Dade County; Anthony Lauro, Deputy Director, Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, Broward County; Rene Morales, Assistant Curator, MAM, Miami-Dade County; and Gavin Perry, Visual Artist, Miami-Dade County, 2009 SFCC Fellowship Recipient. The regional panel forwarded their recommendations to the national panel, which was comprised of Luis Gispert, Visual Artist, Brooklyn, New York; Shamim Momin, Director, Los Angeles Nomadic Division, Los Angeles; and Vesela Sretenovic, PhD, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Phillips Collection, Washington, DC.

The South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Artists Fellowship Program is a cooperative project funded in part with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Florida Department of State Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Arts Council, the Boards of County Commissioners of Broward, Miami-Dade, Martin and Monroe Counties, and the Palm Beach County Cultural Council.
